What are the causes of infertility?

Research shows that 10-15 percent of couples have infertility problems. Infertility can be due to disorder in female, male, or both.

Causes of female infertility:

  • Ovulation disorders are the most common causes of infertility. (40% of infertility in women is caused by ovulation disorders.)
  • Uterine issues
  • Fallopian tube damage or blockage

Causes of male infertility:

  • Sperm disorders such as low sperm count, poor sperm mobility or sperm immaturity.
  • Genital tract abnormalities
  • Impotence or premature ejaculation

When should I refer a doctor for infertility treatment?

As general, in case a couple fails to become pregnant within 12 months of trying to conceive, we should refer to a doctor to determine the reasons for infertility. The doctor will perform a physical and laboratory tests to determine the reason your attempts to pregnancy were unsuccessful and propose the most suitable treatment method for you.

Keep in mind that a particular treatment is not known as the best way to treat infertility.

The best method for each couple will be chosen based on the condition and different factors which are considered to choose the most suitable treatment method

Are infertility treatments methods successful?

With the significant advances in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility in recent decades, about 65% of couples suffering from infertility problems have been able to have a baby through therapies.

Several factors affect the success rate of infertility treatment such as; the IVF treatment methods and woman’s age.

Woman’s age has many impacts on her ability to have childbearing, especially if her age lower than the 30s. Chance of fertility is 40% for a healthy woman in her 20s or early 30s, but this chance is reduced at age 40s to 10% or less.

How is IVF process done?

The IVF process is as follows:

  • Ovulation induction: Initially, the doctor will prescribe medicine to control the level of hormones in the body of the female to make sure that the released eggs are suitable for fertility.
  • Egg retrieval: After the induction ovulation and development of suitable oocytes for fertility, the eggs should be retrieved for in vitro fertilization. Egg retrieval or egg ‘pick up’ is a hospital day procedure where the eggs are collected from your ovaries. An anesthetist will get you ready for a general anesthetic then the mature eggs retrieved and are placed in a culture medium.
  • Fertilization: After receiving the male sperm, the most active sperms will be identified and transferred to an incubator for fertilization where the mature eggs have been kept.  In IVF, high-motility sperms move to the eggs and fertilize them. Once this occurs, the fertilized eggs are considered embryos.
  • Embryo transfer: An embryo transfer is the last part of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. Around 2 or 3 days before the embryo transfer, the doctor will choose the best eggs to transfer to the uterus. Embryos are loaded in a soft catheter and are placed in the uterine cavity through the cervix.

How long will the IVF treatment cycle take?

The IVF infertility treatment method will take 20-25 days.  After the first visit to the doctor and initial examinations, a prescription of medicine for ovary simulation will be issued which ,depending on your condition, will have to be taken for 15-20 days. While on medicine, the female who is being treated must visit the doctor several times for inspection of ovulation status and to control the time of egg release. Fetus formation will take place in a lab and the healthiest fetus will be chosen for transfer to the fetus, this will require 2-5 days.

It is important to remember that whilst ICSI is a technique used in the laboratory to help fertilization occur, it does not guarantee it.  But, using this method of infertility treatment helps to increase the chance of a woman getting pregnant.

How is performed the process of IUI in infertility treatment?

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that includes placing the washed sperm into the woman’s uterus to expedite pregnancy conception. The purpose of IUI is to increase the sperm numbers that reach the egg eventually boosts the chances of fertilization.

This method can be used to increase the chance of fertility.

Also, based on the infertile couple’s condition and the age of women, this method may be used in 3 or 4 treatment cycles to increase the fertility chances.

How Long Does It Take To Do IUI?

The IUI treatment method requires about 15 to 20 days. After the first visit to the doctor and doing the initial examinations, the induction ovulation drugs will be prescribed for 15-20 days.  The female undergoing treatment must visit the doctor for a few times to check the ovulation status and control the time of egg release. The sperm will undergo a special “washing procedure” and the mature oocyte will be combined to it, and then transferred to the female’s uterus.
