Several factors affect the success rate of infertility treatment such as; the IVF treatment methods and woman’s age.

Woman’s age has many impacts on her ability to have childbearing, especially if her age lower than the 30s. Chance of fertility is 40% for a healthy woman in her 20s or early 30s, but this chance is reduced at age 40s to 10% or less.

The couple’s lifestyle has a significant effect on the success of fertility treatment methods, for example, couples who stopped smoking at least 3 months prior to treatment have a higher success rate while couples who smoked had to try twice as hard for success at fertility.

The IVF process is as follows:

  • Ovulation induction: Initially, the doctor will prescribe medicine to control the level of hormones in the body of the female to make sure that the released eggs are suitable for fertility.
  • Egg retrieval: After the induction ovulation and development of suitable oocytes for fertility, the eggs should be retrieved for in vitro fertilization. Egg retrieval or egg ‘pick up’ is a hospital day procedure where the eggs are collected from your ovaries. An anesthetist will get you ready for a general anesthetic then the mature eggs retrieved and are placed in a culture medium.
  • Sperm Preparation: After sperm collection,  the sperm are separated from the semen sample and washed in a specific manner. The sperms are tested to evaluate the sperm motility and shape in selecting the quality sperms. Selected sperms are transferred to the culture medium for fertilization.
  • Fertilization: After receiving the male sperm, the most active sperms will be identified and transferred to an incubator for fertilization where the mature eggs have been kept.  In IVF, high-motility sperms move to the eggs and fertilize them. Once this occurs, the fertilized eggs are considered embryos.
  • Embryo transfer: An embryo transfer is the last part of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. Around 2 or 3 days before the embryo transfer, the doctor will choose the best eggs to transfer to the uterus. Embryos are loaded in a soft catheter and are placed in the uterine cavity through the cervix.

ICSI is most often used with couples who are dealing with male infertility factors. For men who have low sperm count, sperm with low mobility, and the abnormal sperm shape, the sperm may not be collected through normal ejaculation. The sperm obtained from the testis is only appropriate for ICSI procedures when testicular sperm is not able to penetrate an egg by itself. In the ICSI process, a tiny needle, called a micropipette, is used to inject a single sperm into the center of the egg. It is important to remember that whilst ICSI is a technique used in the laboratory to help fertilization occur, it does not guarantee it.  But, using this method of infertility treatment helps to increase the chance of a woman getting pregnant.

Chromosomally, the egg has only an X chromosome, while the sperm can contain either an X or a Y chromosome. If an egg combines with a sperm containing an X chromosome, a female embryo is formed, and if an egg combines with a sperm containing a Y chromosome, a male embryo is formed.

To determine the sex of the embryos, IVF and PGD should be used before the pregnancy. In this method, at first, the embryos are formed in the laboratory by the IVF method.  Three days after the formation of embryos, the expert doctor uses a laser cut in the embryo’s membrane to separate one of the 6 to 8 cells of the embryo without damaging the other cells and examines and determines the gender of the embryo.

Finally, the embryo with the selected gender is transferred to the mother’s uterus to continue growing.

The accuracy of this method in determining the sex of the embryo is about 99%.

    Hello,

My husband and I are interested in surrogacy in Iran. I have suffered from recurrent miscarriages (7 times, last time with donor egg) and now we have decided to look into surrogacy. I would like to know what are the requirements for us to be eligible in Iran. You have mentioned that we need to be a legal couple. Does this mean that a marriage certificate from where we live is fine?
I am both Iranian and Canadian and my husband is Norwegian. Can we do surrogacy in Iran?

Whose name will be on the birth certificate and hospital record as mother?

    Thank you,
